Reading Recovery is a research based early literacy intervention offered to selected students in Year One. Developed in New Zealand, Reading Recovery operates in Australia, Canada, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Students who are offered this additional assistance in literacy receive daily, individualised lessons for 30 minutes from a specially trained teacher. This is in addition to the regular classroom literacy program.
The Reading Recovery teacher identifies the needs of each child and designs an individualised series of lessons that will assist them to develop the skills and strategies necessary to become successful readers and writers.
Each lesson covers aspects of reading, writing, word study (phonics) and handwriting. The series of lessons continues for up to twenty weeks.
